FSX Friday Update

No deal on the fiscal cliff this week, and the market could not have yawned any louder.  The Dow was up, lifted by a rally in financial stocks; the Nasdaq was down, pulled lower by Apple; so the S&P 500 was flat.  YAWN.

And if you think the fiscal cliff negotiations are more important to the market than the technical breakdown in AAPL, either you don’t follow stocks, or you work for CNBC.

The Family Stock Index traded moderately higher throughout the week, closing up 0.6% to 13,285.  Advancers led decliners 15-10, and the distribution of big winners vs. big losers was even fairly symmetrical.  After the tear we’d been on—up 1000 points in two weeks—a week of consolidation and rotation is arguably more bullish than a pell-mell run into overbought territory.  Not to say that pell-mell wouldn’t be fun.

Advancers

  • Dustin (DST) +7.5%.  One of only two new 52 week highs (along with Reagan, ho-hum) and up 36% for all of 2012, Dustin remains an FSX enigma.  You don’t suppose he could have won Powerball and not told any of his family, do you?  Surely he would tell Lisa, though, and LNCE is -0.2% this week.  That’s a lot of money for him to spend by himself.  Well, if Dustin’s introduced next week as the new chairman of Augusta National, I guess we’ll have our answer.
  • Zondro (ZQK) +5.0%.  Zondy’s taken to sleeping on a pillow beside my desk chair.  It’s actually pretty cute…up until he starts gnawing on his butthole.  Dogs are gross.
  • Brinkley (BCO) +3.8%.  What if I’m looking at this the wrong way?  Maybe Brinky doesn’t need to start talking so much as everyone else needs to stop.
  • Zero (ZIP) +3.6%.  Zero’s 9% rally this quarter, coupled with the demise of Lucas, has lifted him out of last place among FSX members.  Clearly he’s been tragically awake at the wheel; it’s time to pop a few Ambien and make this thing happen.
  • Marcus (MCS) +3.5%.  Marcus put together two strong weeks in a row after his wife notified my wife that they wouldn’t be joining the rest of the family for Christmas in NC again this year.  He must not like to travel or something.  I don’t get it; I mean, I travelled all the way out to Target on Monday, and I almost didn’t hate it the whole time.  Katie had to drive, of course; I don’t think my car is working right now, but I’m not sure, since I haven’t tried to start it in a couple months.
  • Reagan (REGN) +2.4%.  Practicing for the spelling bee; it’s about to get real.
  • Ghost Marisa (MOLX) +2.4%.  Marisa loves the Christmas tree, and now that she’s a ghost she doesn’t have to worry about knocking it over.

Decliners

  • Ruby (RBY) -2.2%.  Did you realize that prior to this week, Ruby was the #1 performer in the FSX for the fourth quarter (#3 for the year)?  This is likely just a sensible draught of profit-taking; the Obama afterglow couldn’t last forever.
  • Nicole M. (COLM) -2.4%.  There’s no reason for this sell-off ahead of the Christmas trip to Pfafftown; I’ve learned my lesson, and I promise that this year, all the trap doors and snake pits will be clearly marked.
  • Wilson (WILC) -3.6%.  Is there any way Wilson’s not jealous of Marisa?
  • Jenny (JNY -3.8%) and Lucas (LEI -7%).  Ugh, middle school.  Jenny seems to be turning the corner and is bringing her grades back up; if her dalliance in the land of Cs is brief, her exile in the land of no electronic devices will be equally short.  I don’t like going all Sith on my first-born, but that’s not to say I’m not uncomfortable with the Dark Side.  If I have to decide between bad grades and force lightning, well…

forcelightning

I understand boys can be tricky, especially when their fathers are clandestine Powerball winners—what kind of example does that set, really?  My suggestion?  It might be time for a bolo tie.  I hear that really puts a young man on the path to success.
