FSX Friday Update

Ugh.  (Unless you’re short, in which case, yay!)  Stocks gave a repeat performance this week, with the S&P 500 dropping 1.4% on top of last week’s 2.4% decline.  After outperforming the broader market last week, the Family Stock Index sold off in tandem; just four of the 25 index members advanced, and the FSX fell 1.5% to 12,367.  At Friday’s lows around 12,200 we reached correction territory—down ten percent from the year’s highs—and we’re approaching critical intermediate-term support around 12,000.  12,000 was the bottom of the summer trading range, and proved to be a durable support level for the FSX through repeated tests.  If 12,000 doesn’t hold, the next support is at 10,000, a level not seen since November 2011.  Gloomy as the picture seems to be, we’re still holding on to a double-digit gain for the year.

Advancers

  • Reagan (REGN) +12%.  Earlier this week, Reagan asked me how much her stock was up, and I had to tell her she was, in fact, down.  Then, for some unknown reason, I decided to elaborate.  I told her that while she was still the #1 performer for the year, she was actually negative for the fourth quarter, having pulled back from an October high of $166 to around $135.  In a low voice, Reagan simply said, “not cool.”  Then she gave the market—the entire stock market—the stink-eye.  The surge that followed was a surprise to no one, and to Reagan least of all.
  • Lulu (LULU) +0.4%.  The #2 performer year-to-date (+46%), Lulu wasn’t about to let #1-ranked Reagan (+185%) finish the week as the only advancer.  It’s a hollow gesture, sure, but sometimes those are the best kind.

Decliners

  • Lee (MSTR) -4.0%.  Another new low for MSTR, and it comes during a week when I don’t feel like I’ve mastered much of anything.  I’m plugging away with rewrites; all I can say for certain is that the book is evolving from too long (140K words) to way too long (200K+).  Also it sucks, and I hate it.  Mazel tov!
  • Jodi Ann (JOY -4.7%) and Marcus (MCS -5.5%).  The holiday season is upon us, and this year Marcus may be called up to tell at least one of his siblings about his plans for said season more than a week in advance.  The stress alone is good for a five percent hit to his stock.  Why is Jodi Ann down as well?  Well, who do you think will be the one who actually has to break the news to Marcus’ siblings (assuming the news is the kind that breaks)?  And of course, by ‘break the news to Marcus’ siblings,’ I mean ‘tell Katie.’
  • Brinkley (BCO) -5.0%.  How was Brinky’s week?  Let’s see: he broke the ugly Grandmommie chair (the chair is ugly, not Grandmommie); he broke the Roku; he stuck his hand in his poop-filled diaper; he tried to eat his poop; he fell down several hundred times.  And his sisters think his haircut makes him look like Spock.
  • Jenny (JNY) -4.5%.  Too many friends.
  • Wilson (WILC) -5.9%.  No friends.
