FSX Friday Update

So the market liked the employment report.  Did it like the report because the jobless rate fell to a 44-month low, indicating economic strength and boosting consumer confidence?  Maybe.  Did it like the report because it wasn’t so great that the Fed can’t continue to provide monetary stimulus (and asset-price inflation)?  Could be.  Either way, it didn’t like it for very long.  Did the market like Matt Romney’s debate performance?  Did it even notice?  Does the market care about the November election or the so-called ‘fiscal cliff’ at all?  No, it does not.  It cares about big corporations, the real winners of this and every other election held without campaign finance restrictions.  And big corporations are doing fine.

The Family Stock Index badly underperformed this week, managing only a 0.1% gain against the 1.4% put up by the S&P 500.  Coming into the fourth quarter, the FSX held a 458 bps lead over the S&P; maybe we were feeling like 2012 was in the bag and we just mailed it in this week.  Why does that sound like another performance I’ve been reading a lot about?  Anyway, after this week, our lead is down to 307 bps—substantial, but hardly unassailable.  We need to close the deal on 2012, and by we I mean me.

Advancers

  • Ruby (RJET) +8.0%.  Ruby survived another visit to the dentist with no report of injury to herself or others.  In contrast, I skipped my midyear cleaning in July, only to have the back half of a molar fall off two weeks ago.  Maybe I should start driving to Hilton Head twice a year just to go to the dentist.
  • Zondro (ZQK) +4.5%.  Zondro discovered how to use the couch to jump out of the family room.  He could get a real lift when and if he stops jumping out only to realize—immediately—that he’d rather be in.
  • Reagan (REGN) +4.2%.  In a stunning development, Reagan loves her teacher.  She’s started watching Little Rascals—the show from the 1930s, not the terrible 1994 movie—because her teacher likes Little Rascals.  Does Little Rascals warrant a fresh all-time high for REGN?  Beats me; I was baffled when she crossed the $100 mark, and that was 60 points ago.
  • Katie (CATY) +2.9%.  Katie reached a new low post-baby weight, and year-end is proceeding smoothly.  Am I the reason she can’t break $18?  Probably.  But think of me as necessary ballast; if Katie threatens Reagan’s #1 position—for the year, the quarter, the week, whatever—she’ll get the stink-eye.  Really I’m not weighing Katie down; I’m saving her from the stink-eye.
  • Icarus (FAST) +2.8%.  Icky seems to be enjoying his new ticker.  He also may be enjoying the company of all the lady dogs he’s invited over to the crib whilst his masters are far afield.

Decliners

  • Wilson (WILC) -1.0%.  Can’t jump out of the family room.  Can’t jump at all, come to think of it.
  • Charlotte (ICE -1.8%) and Nicole E. (NICE -3.2%).  Both Nicole and Charlotte sold off aggressively Friday afternoon; the market must have been looking for me to step up and indemnify our visitors against stink-eye.  Alas, there’s only so much I can absorb.
  • Lee (MSTR) -7.2%.  Necessary ballast, saving my wife from the stink-eye.  It’s yeoman’s work.  Everything else this week…meh.
  • Lucas (LEI) -13%.  Investors were hoping for a quick turnaround once the LEI board was forced to add two activist investors this week; looks they’re not going to get it.  There’s a lot of value to be unlocked here, but management’s current approach isn’t cutting it, and investors are losing patience.  The market expects results, and when it doesn’t get results, this is what it does.  No one knows that better than I do.
