FSX Friday Update

Disappointing job numbers this morning—not terrible, Republicans CNBC, just disappointing—and the equity markets don’t care (Dow +15 Friday, +250 for the week).  The markets don’t care because now QE3 is a fait accompli in the U.S., the ECB is on board the Easy Train, and the markets already knew the U.S. economy isn’t creating jobs outside of China and Vietnam.  Blame that last problem on the Bush/Romney vision of gated communities surrounded by tent cities and Wal-marts, but don’t blame it on Obama.  Or do, Republicans CNBC.

The Dow and S&P reached new four-year highs this week, and the Nasdaq notched a 12-year high.  Can you believe how bad Obama has been for business?

The Family Stock Index outperformed the major averages—for once—soaring by 4.2% to break out of a four-month trading range.  The closing level of 13,029 is the highest since May 3; four FSX members (Jenny,  Justin, Mario the Elder, Reagan) made new 52-week highs; several other summer laggards made significant breaks higher (Zondro, Lulu, Lisa, Katie, Brinkley, Jodi Ann).  Breadth was fantastic, with only two stocks declining.  There’s just not much to dislike about the week, from a technical standpoint; in view of that, griping over the fundamentals would be unseemly.  Much like gloating over a report on the suffering of unemployed fellow Americans, and who would do that?

  • Zondro (ZQK +14%) and Lulu (LULU +18%).  Could we be on the verge of an historic cat-dog Entente Cordiale?  There’s a great deal at stake for Zondro and Lulu, each having long occupied the second position in the dog and cat power structures, respectively.  I had never considered a team-up; neither, presumably, had Wilson or Marisa.  Separately, both LULU and ZQK guided higher on earnings and revenue for the full year, not that anyone pays attention to that sort of thing.
  • Lisa (LNCE) +9.1%.  Lisa was dragging down the FSX through Wednesday, having missed the deadline to participate in the Brinky Cup 2012 and plumbing four-month lows as a result.  Then on Thursday came the announcement that LNCE would buy Pretzel Crisps for $340 million; seems like a lot to pay for starch and salt, but that’s what happens when you go to the grocery store on an empty stomach.  I can understand not having time to make NFL picks while performing due diligence on an acquisition of that size.  I’ve done due diligence, and it’s not as fun as you’d think.
  • Brinkley (BCO) +10.9%.  Maybe I could have done more due diligence before agreeing to be trapped here alone with him for five years.  So far he’s gotten the better end of the deal.  Maybe one day he’ll have to change my diapers, but I’d prefer we find another way to balance the scales.  One of those bananas diamond watches you wear to get drafted into the NFL would be nice.

Separately, while I was looking for pictures of NFL draft jewelry, I found this:

Yes, that’s Mr. Potter at the NFL draft last year.

  • Katie (CATY) +6.5%.  We may be through the bulk of ragweed season; the market looks to be pricing in a hard frost in the near future.  Once the season’s ragweed offensive peters out, Katie can get back to her interval jogging routine…until those old-lady knees derail her again.
  • Jenny (JNY) +5.3%.  No old-lady knees here; no setbacks to report from Week Two of middle school, either, and so Jenny decisively through her 52-week high and brings her third-quarter gain to 41%.  She presents the whole experience as being easier than I know it is, but I couldn’t manage even that much when I was her age.
  • Jodi Ann (JOY) +6.1%.  Coal production numbers are ticking back up, and of course, Jodi Ann is a well-known proxy for the coal industry.  It’s one of the things that Marcus loves most about her.
  • Justin (SCI) +4.2%.  Justin made a new high this week, also in decisive fashion.  Better enjoy that government-funded science now, though; if the Republicans sweep the fall elections Justin’s next writing assignments will be chastity pledges and hymnals.

  • Wilson (WILC) -4.1%.  Oh, Wilson.  If the Lulu-Zondro talks progress, this could end badly.  Here’s how I imagine it:

Wilson is the Kaiser, if that wasn’t clear.

  1. Yeah, I kind of figured I would be persona non grata for a bit due to my missing out on the football picks. I’m blaming Dustin (i couldn’t get the spreadsheet to work on my ipad, and he never had time to fool with it)… So, I decided I would make it up to the family by purchasing an actual “Brinkley Cup” that we can pass to the winner each year… Since I am not in the running this year, that seemed fair.
