Steve Forbes, Head Vampire

This is the headline I read on Yahoo Finance:

Tax Rates: Does the U.S. Have the Highest in the World?

The answer, of course, is: not even close.  Yahoo goes on to list dozens of developed countries with higher taxes than the U.S., including, basically, every place else on earth you might consider living.  This is just based on statutory tax rates, and doesn’t take into account all the tax havens and shelters and out-and-out tax-evasion strategies that help rich people like Matt Romney avoid paying taxes ever.  But Steve Forbes, failed Presidential candidate and part-time Head Vampire of Santa Carla, insists that the U.S. does in truth have the most onerous tax burden in the world, based on…um…taxes are bad.  Based on, I guess, Steve has to pay some taxes, and some is more than zero, and ‘some’ has three of the same letters as ‘most,’ and really, 75% correct and completely out of context is more truth than any Republican needs.

I hate this kind of headline, though, because it’s so very Fox News.  It’s like leading your show with the topic, ‘Does President Obama Eat Babies?’ and debating it for thirty minutes like it’s not completely insane.  That’s a nice piece of sophistry right there, partially legitimizing a baseless, ridiculous, slanderous assertion that you ultimately, grudgingly disprove by taking it up as a credible topic for debate in the first place.  But after all, if you invite a vampire into your house, all the shit that goes down after that is really your fault.

  1. Wow, they do look exactly alike. You got one thing wrong though – it’s Matt Rommey, remember?

    • Right, right. I need to get that straight or I might accidentally vote for the wrong guy.
