FSX Friday Update

Because today’s employment report and the market reaction to it were so dismal, I decided to lead with a headline that should comfort investors.  This is from Bloomberg News today.

JPMorgan Names Bacon Deputy Risk Chief After $2 Billion Loss

That leaves just one question:

Either one works for me.

The market sold off on Friday after a flattish holiday-shortened week, primarily in response to the weak employment numbers.  The hand-wringing over jobs infuriates me, and I am as angry with the Obama Administration as with about the flaws in the public debate as I am with the Republican corporatists.  The Republicans are full of crap and are going to push the broken supply-side theme as a way to—surprise—cut taxes for rich people and corporations.  But at least they have a plan.  The Obama folks have been pushing a theme of slow, steady economic improvement that will presumably lead to accelerating job creation.  Only it won’t, at least not outside of China and Southeast Asia.  Every politician that says otherwise ought to be shouted down.  The job market won’t recover in the U.S. because there are no jobs outside of the service industry—everything is made in China, from shoestrings to iPhones.  EVERYTHING.  Do something about THAT, you cowards.  If a politician says anything about tariffs or other trade measures he’s branded a protectionist.  But wait a minute here…isn’t protection a good thing?  What has unprotected trade with China gotten us?  If Obama won’t deal with the real reasons for high unemployment, he doesn’t deserve a second term.  And if the employment trend continues, he won’t get one.

The Family Stock index tracked the S&P’s 3% loss on the week, giving back all of last week’s relief-rally gains to close at 12,051.  I don’t think it’s that bad, but I look up right now and what do I see?

Bizarro says no; Jenny’s pink chicken thing is visibly despondent; and the monster cup won’t even look at me.  Maybe it is that bad.

  • Wilson (WILC) +4.5%.  I cleaned out the dog crates this week as part of my Spring Offensive in the girls’ room.  Wilson is taking it better than Zondro (ZQK -10%), probably because his experience will allow him to replace the filth and stink I removed much faster than his compatriot can.  Reagan said his Wil-scent is like a huge fart, to which I said ‘you’re like a huge fart,’ because that’s the kind of exchange I have with Reagan.  In fact, Wilscent is the smell of mouth-death…and in the post-Randy era–R.I.P.–nobody does it better.
  • Ruby (RJET) +1.7%.  Swimming swimming swimming.  Ruby says she wants to lose ten more pounds before Mario’s wedding, but she can’t be talking about weight.  Maybe she’s betting on the English side in Euro 2012 and she wants to do it in the proper currency.  Otherwise there’s not ten losable pounds left, not that I reckon.
  • Winston (ED) +1.1%.  I learned this week that Winston will not have a role in his owners’ upcoming wedding.  He will, instead, be boarded.  And judging by the market’s reaction, that’s just fine, possibly because Winston is a dog and why would you have a dog in your wedding?  He also won’t be going with Mario and Nicole on their honeymoon.  Bummer.

  • Icarus (FLOW) -6.2%.  I don’t have any specific information about Icarus’ status for the Justin-Nicole honeymoon, but really, is there any chance he won’t be coming along?  I wonder how Justin will feel when he confirms that Icarus won’t be allowed in the delivery room when Nicole delivers their first child (you know he’ll ask).  Will he be sad?  Of course not.  Will he think, at least once, ‘I wish Icarus could be here’?  If Nicole still thinks the answer isn’t yes, this first year of marriage could be rockier than expected.
  • Jenny (JNY) -5.1%.  The girls’ last day of school is June 7, and guess what starts June 8?  Euro 2012!  We’re all going to watch!  We’ll turn Euro 2012 into Eure-o 2012!
  • Brinkley (BCO) -6.2%.  Too much?  Probably too much.
  • Katie (CATY) -6.2.  Look, it’ll be fun.  Who will survive Group B?   Can anyone beat the Spaniards?  Will the Greeks last in Euro football longer than they last in the Euro currency?
  • Reagan (REGN) -6.2%.  If you don’t want to watch, that’s too bad, because I’m going to watch, and you’ll have to watch me watching, and I’m going to enjoy it.
  • Lee (MSTR) -6.2%.  Or maybe we should just wait for the Olympics.
  • Jodi Ann (JOY) -7.5%.  The market wonders what’s on tap for the Jodi Ann summer.  It’ll take a few weeks to mop up that puddle of Marcus, but that still leaves a couple months to play with.  Then why the sell-off?  The market doesn’t like uncertainty.  Or summer.
