All That’s Missing Is A Corncob Pipe Or A Crazy Russian Monk

Damn, I said to Katie last night, they’ve got to fire him now.  Joe Paterno released a statement yesterday in which he unilaterally declared that he would coach the rest of the season.  The statement read, in part, “At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status.  They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.”  If you knew nothing about the Penn State child-abuse scandal, and thus nothing about whether and why the Board of Trustees might have been contemplating firing the football coach, you should come to the same conclusion, after reading that statement, as the Board did when they fired said coach today.  If you’ve ever had a manager, a commanding officer, a teacher, or a parent, you know that Penn State had to fire him.  If you tell the boss he can’t fire you, unless he truly can’t fire you, he has to fire you.  And anybody can get fired.  Harry Truman fired Douglas MacArthur, and Truman was still selling hats when MacArthur was governor-general of the Philippines.  Hell, Russia fired one Nicholas Romanov, whose title at the time of his ouster was Tsar and Autocrat of All the Russias; if a man whose title is Head Football Coach thinks he can’t get fired, he hasn’t absorbed nearly as much history as his 84 years allowed.  Now it’s up to Paterno to brush up on said history before the rest of his gets written for him.  After all, he can probably remember that General MacArthur got a ticker-tape parade, but Tsar Nicholas II got machine-gunned in the woods.
