FSX Friday Update

How are we going to get out of this Greek morass?  I’ve got a plan.  Let’s cover ourselves in mud, make a bunch of spears and log traps and shit, and call them out.

Do it!  Kill me I’m here!  Default, Greece.  Default default default.  Come on!  Do it now!

The market continues to meander, making little oxbow lakes of panic all over the landscape.  When Bloomberg terminals fell silent on Friday, the major averages were all down around two percent for the boring, boring week.  Even the Groupon IPO was exactly and only what it was expected to be.  Did you know that Groupon’s revenue for all of 2009 was something like $6 million, and then more than $600 million last quarter alone?  I don’t even know what that means.  What I think it means is that you can’t use any kind of P/E to growth metrics (what we used to call the PEG ratio) to value anything in the social media space, because all the growth happens instantly.  There is no growth; there’s just a fuse and an explosion.  How do you value that?  I don’t.

The Family Stock Index outperformed for a second straight week, falling 1.1% to close at 11,290.  At this level we are poised in the middle of our 12-month range (13,700-9,200), the zenith and nadir of which occurred almost exactly 6 months apart (April 8 and October 4, respectively).  What does that mean, technically?  It means diddly-squat.  But it sure seems like it should mean something, doesn’t it?

  • Zero (FRZ) +24%.  This is a huge move in Zero, and it comes after a visit to NC during which it was revealed that as Zero never reads this blog, I can bust on him in the FSX Updates with impunity.  A more likely explanation, according to Katie, is that Zero has in common with her an affinity for Swedish Fish and zebra stripes.  But the truth is, I believe, quite simple: cheese is so good.
  • Justin (WOLF) +14%.  Cheese is soooo good.
  • Icarus (FLOW) +3.0%.  Did Icky get a little cheese too?  Probably not, considering how quickly the pizza vanished.  Probably he did manage to sneak a little cat poop, though.  I caught him making a poop run once, and it stands to reason he made more than the one run.

  • Brinkley (BCO) -4.6%.  Yesterday will go down in the history of Operation Simba as the Day of Five Poops Unless I Lost Count And There Were Actually Six—or just the Day of Five Poops for short.  Brinky has strep throat, and his amoxicillin is not agreeing with him, so he—and his pants—are not agreeing with me.  If he feels half as bad as he smells, I’d say he got off easy with a five percent drop this week.
  • Katie (CATY) -5.5%.  I’ve always thought it was odd for Katie’s company to end its fiscal year in September rather than December like, you know, the actual year.  I understand, of course, that it’s a not-uncommon practice in some industries, but it still seems unnecessary, kind of like Daylight Savings Time.  Yes, there’s a reason, but is it a good enough reason to make everything so damn confusing?  Now I’ve come to think there is a more nefarious purpose: this way the process of closing the books can be stretched from the end of the fake year to the end of the real year.  All I can say with certainty is that this year-end will be over in time for Katie to start her preparations for the next year-end.
  • Mario the Younger (SUP -6.8%) and Dustin (DST -6.8%).  Chromosomes notwithstanding, Mario and Dustin don’t have all that much in common, at least at first glance.  It’s certainly unusual that they would trade in tandem.  This week, though, Katie has been showing me pictures that one of the Majorca Machi affiliates has been posting on Bookface, through which the market has learned a great deal about Dustin and Mario.  It seems that Dustin spent high school (1) jamming and/or (2) making Dustin Face, and that around the same time (1990?  1992?) Mario was proving in advance that my son is mostly Eure, by being no larger at 10 years of age than Brinky is at 10 months.  It was, apparently, a short and surly time to live in Wytheville.
  • Lee (MSTR) -18.8%.  Jiminy Cricket, what happened?  I finished the first chapter of the book on Wednesday—ahead of schedule, if anything—even with Monday and the morning of Tuesday lost to the extended Charlotween celebration and Brinky savaging my ears and nose throughout the week.  So what gives?  You know, I bet this book is going to be finished on schedule, and it’s going to be a bad-ass piece of fiction to boot.  I bet I don’t have any trouble finding a publisher, and the book will sell millions of copies.  Then I’ll go a speaking tour in which I say boatloads of the crazy stuff that only Brinky gets to hear now, and I’ll be world-famous for my outlandish, Oscar-Wildesque wit by the time the tour is over.  And then my life of solitude spent lecturing to no one in particular in a British accent will be gone forever.  That would suck.  No wonder MSTR lost almost 20% the week I scheduled my transcendence to transcend.

  2. I just realized I only looked at this post on my phone, and the pictures are much cooler on the big screen.

    • Let’s watch Predator! Family Movie Time!

      • Have I ever actually watched Predator? I’m not certain that I have. And even though I’m not sure about that, I am fairly certain that it might not be a family movie.

      • I wasn’t planning to watch Predator with the girls. I’m just kidding like Jason…unless you’re gonna do it.

      • I don’t think Predator would be so bad for them. It’s really no worse than most of the stuff they’ve seen. They’re cool. That movie is awesome.

  3. Wow. There’s no way to top that response. Love.
