What Is It?

This thing crawled out from under the grill the other day and I followed it around the yard until I got a half-decent picture.

It was built like an ant, but an easy 1/4 inch long and covered in what looked like red velvet.  No wings that I could detect and not especially fast.  Is it some kind of IFV in development for the Yard Dominion?  Whatever ordnance it’s carrying, it didn’t want me to see.  I let it go.  That was two weeks ago and I haven’t seen anything like it since.  I’m wondering if I made a mistake.

  1. You nailed it – that beast is called a red velvet ant. Or cow killer. And it’s actually a wasp.

    • Terrific. And wait until you see the enormous wasp-thing that flew into the kitchen two nights ago. I killed it and kept it in a jar.
