Top Cartoons

I have been watching Jem every morning with Brinkley (7:30 on Hub!) and I got to thinking about what cartoons I really loved when I was a kid.  Like my other lists, I’m going to be totally wrong on this one.  Hopefully Marcus will tell me what I’m forgetting;  so many of these were shows that he and I would watch on the big TV in Pop’s bar room on summer afternoons.  Charlotte was there, too, probably, but I feel like she had scarlet fever every time we were in Norfolk and was semi-conscious and incoherent, even though I think that was only one time, or maybe it never happened at all.  So this is it:

  1. Thundercats
  2. Count Duckula
  3. Heathcliff
  4. Jem
  5. Ducktales

This list only covers shows that I watched when I was a kid, but which are unimpeachably awesome to this day.  Ranma 1/2 and Kim Possible would make the list if I were casting a wider net, probably in positions #1 and #4.

  1. Did I ever have scarlet fever? I don’t know. Justin and I watched some of our home videos with friends recently, and the four of us siblings are all the same people we were as children. It’s hilarious.
Do you think the theme song weighs heavily on a cartoon’s greatness? Every cartoon in your top 5 has an amazing theme song.

  2. The theme song definitely weighs in. I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is on there, but Thundercats would have to be #1 for me, too. What about Danger Mouse? I remember liking that. The dark horse is Inhumanoids. It has a terrible, terrible theme song, and the show itself is kind of awful; there are insane moments, however, that will never be topped ever. Just Google “decompose transformation” and go to the first YouTube hit. That was a real memory that turned out to be as horrifying now as it was then. I don’t know if that counts as unimpeachably awesome, but it counts for something.

Additions: David the Gnome and The Wuzzles, for the theme songs alone. Now I just want to Google theme songs. The greatest of all time is from Perfect Strangers, and then it’s Ducktales, and then it’s David the Gnome. Then it’s Count Duckula, and then it’s the ending theme from Count Duckula. Well, looks like my evening is set/ruined!

    • Danger Mouse was the back half of Count Duckula, that’s part of how that half hour was so magical. I used to get up at 5 a.m. and watch DM and Ducky-boos when I was 15. Then Dad died and ruined childhood.

    • Was David the Gnome the one where he said schlitzweis or something as his greeting and so you busted out with your towel/cape and yelled “shitville!” that one time when we lived in Newbern Heights? That is still the hardest I’ve ever laughed. I thought I was going to die.
