I Need A Sword

Filed under: Stuff I Just Wanted To Say — lbej @ 10:40

I lost my sword in the Basement War and I need a new one.  Every time I look around, it’s in my face.  I need a sword like the one Justin inadvertently gave me, only better.  It should be sharp and strong, and it should hold an edge in battle.  That sword I had was my favorite yard tool for years.  Perhaps some sort of Allied initiative could be arranged, perhaps in conjunction with my birthday.

    • Alright, look. I’ve got a lot of thoughts on this as I used to spend time researching the definitive battle-ready swords available. The katana you had was, in fact, not battle-ready. It was probably stainless steel – pretty high quality but not designed for war.
The question is really about what sort of sword you want in terms of design. The katana is, of course, the most ultimate in terms of balance and cutting edge and the best in the hands of a skilled warrior. But as I consider it, I think you’d be better served by something more European (broadsword, maybe, something single-handed). Or Roman. How do you feel about a Gladius? It adds thrusting to your options. That may not help with yard work, but you just never know when it could come in handy.

      • Incidentally, it’ll almost certainly be carbon spring steel.

      • It’s got to be fairly long so that I can keep my distance from the enemy. I don’t like to fight up close, especially against spiders, because their principal advantage over me is that they can explode my brain by getting on me. It’s also got to be extremely sharp and not easily blunted, because I slash a lot. I don’t stab much because what would I stab? Of course, you never know when Lazylob and Attercob might show up, and stabbing was a good motion for Bilbo. A broadsword might be nice. A double-edged sword is appealing because I was missing that before.

  3. You’re going to want a replica sword like the ones for sale at comic conventions. Probably one with a dragon or a naked lady on the handle. Or both. Or you want fake Wolverine claws.
